The focus of this course (Life Science) is the scientific study of the human body and its major components and systems. This course offers students a hands-on approach to learning through laboratory work (including preserved animal and organ dissections), student multimedia presentations, independent student research, case studies and field studies. Units of study include: levels of organization; body support and movement; communication and control; fluids and transport; homeostatic balance; human development; and the interrelationships between body systems.

Introduction to Ethnic Studies challenges students to frame their individual identity, their family history, and their community history through the lenses of race, ethnicity, gender, nationality and culture.  Students will examine case studies that identify problems and analyze causes of systemic inequality through historical and contemporary contexts.  This course will also focus on developing reading, writing, notetaking and dialogue skills necessary to create and present well-organized arguments.  The semester-ending project will focus on the history and the work of a social movement.  By the end of this course, students should have an understanding of what it means to live responsibly and ethically as men and women with and for others.

Introduction to Finance

Criteria for Enrollment: Grade of B or better in Algebra 2, Approval of Department Chair, teacher recommendation.

Students taking this elective will develop the skills needed to make sound financial decisions. Topics will include planning your career, payroll and taxes, banking, credit, budgeting, purchasing, basic economics, an introduction to stats and business ethics.  All of these topics will be taught through a lens of fiscal and ethical responsibility. This course also extends beyond personal finance to some topics more relevant to college level business and finance courses.  Therefore, it can provide a stronger foundation for students considering that path of study in college.

Jazz Band C

Jazz Band prepares students to perform a variety of musical competitions from the 1920s through the present, focusing primarily on large-ensemble jazz in the Big Band and swing tradition.  This class is available to students who have taken private lessons for at least one year, or participated in their middle school Band program.  Jazz Band will perform at the Winter Concerts, the Spring Pops Concerts, the Performing Arts Assembly, and several festivals or adjudicated performances.

 

This course is offered outside of the 9:00 am – 2:45 pm school day. Meets 2 afternoons per week for 2 hours each, plus performances.

Journalism

Journalism is a year-long 8th period course in which students will learn the skills necessary to serve as Managing Editors for the school newspaper of St. Ignatius, Inside SI.  The primary objective of this class is the publishing of six issues of Inside SI.  As such, students will be involved in editorial decisions, including determining content, supervising reporters in their section (Affinity, Arts, Feature, Humor, Op-Ed, Outside SI News, SI News, Sports, and Spotlight), writing articles, editing, and suggesting lay out for pages in each issue.  Students enrolled in this course will practice effective collaboration skills (both on-line and in-person) and will work to ensure Inside SI reflects the diverse and unique voices of all members of the SI community.   Credit for this class will be included in the SI GPA calculation.

Enrollment in the class is subject to Moderator Approval.  Individuals who apply for and are accepted as Managing Editors the previous Spring semester will be enrolled by the moderators during the Fall semester of the school year. Students will meet regularly each week.

*This course is offered outside of the 9:00 am – 2:45 pm school day, 8th period ONLY : This class meets weekly to discuss journalism topics and conduct planning for issues.  During the two weeks prior to each issue’s production, students will meet every day after school for approximately 3 hours.

Language Teaching Assistant

Language Teaching Assistants provide support for the Language faculty for 1 hour/week.  Teaching Assistants fulfill the following duties:

      1. checking homework
      2. grading objective sections of tests
      3. doing Internet or other research
      4. decorating bulletin boards
      5. peer tutoring

Normally, the student will help before school or after school. There will be times when some of the correcting may be taken home for delivery on the following day. Interested students may apply by requesting and completing a Teaching Assistant Contract from their teacher.

Latin 1

The Cambridge Latin Course, Units 1 and 2, open the door to the Latin language and literature for the beginning student through adapted readings about a Roman family living in Pompeii. Students will engage in the following activities: reading Latin aloud and silently; asking and answering Latin questions about the readings; translating Latin sentences into English and vice-versa; memorizing and using vocabulary; developing listening and speaking skills; studying the history and origin of English words derived from Latin; and learning about the customs, history, and mythology of the ancient Romans, especially as they have affected our own culture today. The aims of the course are: to teach students to read Latin accurately and confidently; and to familiarize students with life in the early Roman Empire.

Latin 2 continues the progress of first-year Latin. Students will read and write more sophisticated Latin, incorporating passive voice, various types of clauses, participles, infinitives and the subjunctive mood (mode), as they begin to transition to “real Latin,” authentic primary sources from the Roman era.
